Good evening Mike,

I have had a quick scan through the link. Page 42 William James Trethowan is the grandfather of the Michael, John and Herbert Montague Trethowan I mentioned and W J Trethowan came up to Salisbury from St Austell with a fellow Solicitor Frank Nodder (talking from memory as I left Salisbury in 1977) and set up Nodder and Trethowan Solicitors Salisbury in about 1865. I started work for Trethowan & Vincent & Fultons as it then was in March 1960 at the Bridge Street premises. They then sold out their interests in Bridge Street in about 1977/78 and moved to new offices in New Street Salisbury and in the last two years have moved to large brand new offices on the road into Salisbury from Andover/London. The older generation Trethowans lived at Woodgreen near Fordingbridge on or in the New Forest.

The only building I have come across in Cornwall with the name Trethowan was one used as a café just East of Scorrier.

Have you been in touch with Deborah Tritton at County Records to see if they have any Trethowan person or property indexed?

Best wishes

Edward Bailey

Subject: The Trethowan Name

I have tried to get the following on to the Trethowan web site - not sure if I have the right link now, 'cos I was re-directed! I am a direct descendant of one of the Cornish Trethowans - my Great-Grandfather was John Trethowan, a sea Captain who captained the "Malborough Hill" - a 4 masted Barque. He married the widow of his greatest friend, one James Nettle-Burley, some years after his death at sea (a relative of the notorious "Jersey Lily" Langtry, the once mistress of King Edward V11. James's wife was Clarinda, who's great-grandaughter was called Judith Burley, now Judith Ritchie !! A long story, but the family tree came full circle when I married my second cousin, Judith!! I have quite a substantial dossier on our side of the Trethowan family which originally came from Constantine, near Falmouth. My mother wrote a story based around her Grand-mother, Clarinda, called "Clarinda" which documents the life of that lady, including details of many other Trethowans. You might also be interested to know that well known "Trethowans" on my side of the family have included Harry Trethowan, once a designer for Wedgewood Potteries, and later a Director of the famous London store, Heals. He was considered one of the UK's greater experts on porcelain etc. and was a regular personality on the BBC radio in the 1950's. Another was Ian Trethowan, a former Director General of the BBC. I will be pleased to reply to anyone out there who wants further info - if I have it!

Regards Nigel

Hi Mike,

I am descended from the Trethowan family through my 2nd great grand mother who was Ann Trethowan married to John Tregeagle also from Cornwall who emigrated to South Australia as pioneers in 1840. I have a substantial dosier on Trethowan Family History in Australia and Cornwall.

Any enquiries are welcome. Maxwell Antuar \E-mail address: bevnmax@iprimus.com

In answer to yours, if you would like to you may include my first E-mail so that any one interested in the Trethowan Family History can contact me if they so desire.

Thanks

Max

Hi Mike,

Thanx for the email.  Please go ahead and add email to you site.  I came across a little gem yesterday while consulting an orthopedic surgeon about my knee (I am a dedicated distance runner) and he told me that he uses a biopsy instrument called a "Trethowan" which is used to remove small samples of bone for analysis.  Now there's a thing!!

Have a happy day

Ian Trethowan

From: Hugh Trethowan <??> Date: 19 Aprilh 1998 Dear Mike

I've just been to your 'Trethowan' website and am very impressed; not least to find myself listed under 'Flight Simulation'(an ardent hobby of mine) and mention of my late father's brother William Henry who died a few years ago. If you want to put me in more formally I am a Composer running KEYBOARD PILOTS MUSIC production company in Hong Kong. From a small amount of research, our family originates in/Around the Helford estuary, Cornwall where there used to be a village (or at least a mansion) called Trethowan. There are also reports of our family having resided in Constantine.

I have a rather wonderful reprint of a UK Ordinance Survey Map of the area which I could try and scan and e-mail to you if you'd like. Hugh.
